Extra Information

Latest Vehicle Tax changes from March 2025 that pertain to Vehicles up to 10 years old.

According to the “Malus automobile : quelles taxes devez-vous payer ?” page (Feb 2025) from the Ministry of Economy: economie.gouv.fr

  • Two parallel taxes at first registration:

    • Malus COâ‚‚ — the tax determined by the COâ‚‚ emissions of the vehicle.

    • Malus masse — a separate tax based on the vehicle’s mass (order of march) for heavy/large vehicles.

  • For the malus COâ‚‚: from 1 March 2025, the trigger is 113 g COâ‚‚/km. Above that you pay a malus starting at €50. The maximum malus in 2025 period (for very high-emitting vehicles) is capped at €70,000 for ~192 g/km or above. economie.gouv.fr

  • Some vehicles are exempt or partially exempt (e.g., electric vehicles, certain hybrids, vehicles for disabled persons) as long as they respect the criteria. economie.gouv.fr+1

  • The malus is paid at the time of first registration of the vehicle in France (neuf or import) and is calculated on the basis of the homologated COâ‚‚ emissions figure.

Latest Vehicle Registration changes from May 2025 that pertain to Electric Vehicles.

  • Until 30 April 2025, 100 % electric vehicles were fully exempt from the regional portion of the registration fee in nearly all French regions.

  • From 1 May 2025, each region can decide whether to keep the full exemption, offer a partial reduction, or charge the full regional tax — which is often the same rate applied to petrol/diesel cars.

  • Most regions have scrapped the exemption and now require electric vehicle owners to pay the regional tax based on fiscal horsepower (chevaux fiscaux), so registration costs can range from roughly €150 to €750 or more depending on power and region.
